Ted Prior, author and illustrator of Grug series of books has answered 5 of The Little Big Book Club's favourite questions.

1. What do you think makes a good book for children?
Obviously it needs to relate to them as children. They need to feel the character in the book is just like one of them. Whenever I start writing a Grug story I have to almost imagine that I’m a child again and transport myself into that world. For that reason I don’t understand why children’s book awards are judged by adults.

2. When did you know that you wanted to be a children’s author
Around 1978 I was starting to read stories to my two youngest children who were then very young. At the time we were living in the bush in northern New South Wales so I thought I would create an imaginary bush character and write a story about it. I doodled around on paper and Grug was born!

3. The Little Big Book Club’s Facebook fans came up with some great suggestions for other Grug titles in the series. Do you have any plans to add to your collection of Grug stories?
For some time I have been thinking about ‘Grug Meets a Dinosaur’ (probably an eastern water dragon).

4. How do you see printed children’s books evolving with advances in technology?
Although the new technology is taking over everything, I still see a place for a ‘real’ book in the hands of a child, especially a picture book for those children who are just starting to read. I have an 11 year old daughter who is very Techno savvy but she still goes to the public library and borrows books and will sit and read at every available opportunity. Of course Grug will never need a computer or smartphone to survive in his world.

5. What is one of the best things about being a children’s author?
Since the Grug books were published again about 3 years ago I have been amazed at how many young adults come up to me and acknowledge that they have been Grug fans since childhood. That has been the best thing!
