Caterpillar is very afraid of the world around her, and even with the encouragement of her friends the Wallaby, Goanna and Snake, she is still to frightened to explore her own environment.  To make herself feel safe, Caterpillar forms a chrysalis where she hangs and hides away from the other animals, but then she begins to feel lonely and longs for some company.  As she realises this, Caterpillar's body starts to change into something magical...wings sprout from her back and she transforms into a beautiful butterfly.  With her newfound confidence, Butterfly spreads her wings and soon discovers there are many other butterflies to share her journey with and all of her fears are overcome.

Caterpillar and Butterfly  is a beautiful picture book for preschoolers depicting the life cycle of a caterpillar using Aboriginal art.  The overall message of the book is about finding inner strength and having confidence to try new things which is something that children in this age group might relate to as they are growing up.
