How many in my container?

You will need:

• A clear container (strawberry punnet, honey bucket, etc) NOTE: a plastic container is safer than glass
• Items that will fit into the container (lego, blocks, pegs, trains, pencils, etc)
• Template (optional)


1. Help your child to place some items into the container.
2. Talk about the smaller items fitting into the larger container. Can you guess how many items are inside?
3. Chat about the biggest number and the smallest number. How do different shape items fit in and does the number of items change?
4. Count the items going into the container and then count backwards when you take them out.


If you don’t have a clear container use the template to draw some items in the jar, or collect items from around your home to place on the template while counting. How many items fit in the jar shape? Are some too big? What happens if you just use very small items? Talk about size, shape and volume.
Head out for a walk or explore your garden and see what you can count – steps on the stairs, bricks in a wall, slats in a fence or pegs on a washing line.
Look at your shopping and see how many slices are in a loaf of bread, strawberries or tomatoes in a punnet or grapes in a bunch. What else can you count or measure?
