Books Always Everywhere by Jane Blatt and Sarah Massini 

 
Theme: Books About Books (August 2014) 
In this book, we join in the celebration that books can be anything, anywhere, all shapes and all sizes. Brightly illustrated with simple text, it spreads the important message to families that books are the best!
 

Key Message For Parents: Children Learn Language by Listening to it and Using it 

We can help babies learn language by listening to it and using it in the following ways: 
  • Read together, read often and have fun with reading. It is never too early to read with your baby 
  • Have books for babies to play with and interact with in their everyday activities, for example, on the change table, in the car, in the toy box 
  • Visit the library with your baby and borrow books for them and for yourself too. 
 

Learning Outcome 5: Children are Effective Communicators 

We can help babies to become effective communicators by: 
  • Interacting with them as they make and play with sounds 
  • Having conversations with your baby that involves talking with them and listening to their responses 
  • Reading and sharing books every day 
  • Singing songs, and nursery rhymes, having fun with words and music.
 
Before Reading 
Even with very young babies, you can introduce the story. You can show your baby the cover of the book. You can point out the title, and say ‘this story is called Books Always Everywhere’. You can also point out that there is an author called Jane Platt and an illustrator called Sarah Massini. You can look at the front cover of the book at point to the pictures. You can say ‘here is a little boy and a little girl and they are reading a book together’. You can point to their hats and the objects around them. You can say ‘in this story there are lots of babies and children and they read books always everywhere! Let’s turn the page and find out where all of the books are in the story’.
 
During Reading 
You can take your time with this story, as the text is very simple and short. You may wish to read the whole story through the first time, without stopping to talk about anything, unless a baby points to something or says something. If you choose to read the story a second time, you can stop on each page to point out the things that are happening. For example for the first two pages ‘Book big, Book small’, you can point to the animals featured, ‘What is this animal? It is a big elephant. What is this animal? It is a small mouse’. 
There are lots of little features of each page you can point to and look at. There are also rhyming words to discover such as ‘book small and book tall’. This is a good opportunity to learn new words and if you enjoy the story, you can read it over and over again and discover something new each time. It is good to take cues from a baby, so if they babble or talk or point to something, or if they look at you while you are reading, you can respond to them and engage them in the story. Listen to them when they talk, and then respond. Babies also love to hold the book, and can help turn the pages. They might even want to suck the book! Valuing every baby’s responses to reading helps them to love reading too.
 
After Reading

This story is all about reading books wherever you are. Remind parents to keep books on the change table, in the car, in the toy box, next to the bed or cot, in the kitchen, in the pram, you can take them to the park, take a book with you everywhere! You can also invite parents/carers to read with any other babies they know such as at Mum’s Groups, playgroup or play dates. If parents have visitors to their home, they can be invited to read with baby. Grandparents, Uncles, Aunties, Cousins, everyone can read with babies and show them that reading always everywhere can be fun!
