At the Beach I See… scuttling crabs or dancing jellyfish – what can you see? Get ready to discover the wonders of animals and objects you might find at the beach or in the ocean. At the Beach I See is a short story, filled with new and exciting words, such as scuttling, scattered, drifting and gliding, and every page has a vibrant picture with bright colours and patterns.

Activity Title: Water play

You will need:

• You and your baby
• Plastic items such as toy blocks, toy ducks or kitchen items (plastic containers,
cups or spoon). Anything that your baby can easily hold
• A tub or shallow bowl with a small amount of water
• Towel for easy clean up.

What to do:

  1. Find a comfortable spot to sit, you might like to sit outside
  2. Water play can get messy, wear clothes that are okay to get wet. Keep a towel close by for easy dry off and clean up
  3. Add a small amount of water to a shallow bowl or tub. You do not need a lot of water for your baby to play with. Have a jug close by and top up if needed
  4. Add plastic objects to the water play. Choose items that your baby can hold easily.
  5. Interact with your baby and chat with them about what they are doing. For example, “You are splashing with your hand” or “You put the block in the water” or “See the water pour out of the cup”

More ideas

  • Sing songs during bath time/ water play.
  • Play outside with bubbles. Babies will love you to blow bubbles and as they grow stronger they will begin to reach and touch them. Older children can learn to blow bubbles.
  • Visit a beach and explore the sand with your baby. Let them touch and feel with their hands. What happens when you add some water? Make time to explore and play together.
