Laura Hughes

I am an award-winning illustrator, based in Hastings on the South Coast of England.

I love picture books and have illustrated many titles for children including There’s a Pig Up My Nose, written by John Dougherty; Daddy’s Sandwich by Pip Jones and Hop Little Bunnies by Martha Mumford.

I want to inspire children to discover the joys of reading and I regularly visit schools during World Book Day. For the last couple of years I have been supporting the Bookpen Pals scheme which pairs authors and illustrators with UK schools to foster a love of books through regular correspondance. I have also appeared at many literary festivals including Hay, Edinburgh and Cheltenham.

As well as illustrating books for young readers, my artwork has featured on greetings cards, gift-wrap, packaging and stationery in countries all over the world.

My illustrations are loose, energetic and have a human touch. Inks are my favourite medium, but I also love working with gouache paint and crayons. When I’m finished making a mess at my desk, I scan and edit my images digitally.

I studied illustration at Kingston University and graduated in 2005. I live by the sea in Hastings, UK and am represented by Arabella Stein at The Bright Agency.
