LBBC's National Reading Development Initiative

Phong Truong,
Branch Support Librarian,
Wellington Shire Library, Victoria

I have found LBBC to be to extremely resourceful and have bought their books for our library baby bag pack which we give out free to new parents to encourage reading in the early childhood years.

During my talks to New Parents Group at local hospitals, I have often used LBBC's posters to guide parents on which books were suitable for certain ages and referred them onto LBBC's website to match books with crafts activities to do with their children.

Professor Susan Hill kindly travelled to Stratford in Central Gippsland to spread greater awareness not only to librarians but maternity nurses, teachers and early childhood professionals.  Feedback from those that attended found there is indeed a need to place an importance on early childhood literacy and more awareness, promotion and community involvement was required.

Literacy is one way for us to help build a more harmonious society.  As research shows, literacy is related to school performance, self-esteem, life chances and connects parent and child fostering a better relationship.

Bilby Bus | Family Outreach Services
Centacare Catholic Family Services

Centacare's The Bilby Bus, a mobile intensive supported playgroup, has used many of The Little Big Book Club's resources to supplement their services to families metro wide. All families are provided with resource packs appropriate to their children's age when first attending playgroup. The older children have enjoyed greatly the newly released 'It's ABC Time' packs and the Baby packs are being eagerly awaited by our families with new additions. Stories with workbooks have been a great source of entertainment for kindy aged children and have prepared them well for school. The Little Big Book CLub Resource file is an easy, quick reference point when working with families looking for more at home activities. Staff also utilise activity suggestions and examples when planning for activities at playgroups. The Little Big Book Club resources are an invaluable tool for vulnerable families accessing The Bilby Bus Playgroups as they are unlikely to access them at other more main stream distribution points. i.e. Libraries. The staff have found working with The Little Big Book Club enjoyable and valuable and look forward to working with them in the future.
