Building Literacy Before School
A key aim of The Little Big Book Club is to support sustainable community development programs. To this end, a module based training program called Building Literacy Before School has been developed in partnership with the University of South Australia and Public Library Services of South Australia with support from the Local Government Association. The first training program was held prior to the public launch of The Little Big Book Club in SA in November, 2005.
Building Literacy Before School training and development program aims to provide library and early childhood staff with training and development in order to provide an early childhood literacy program within their establishment.
The training program and the accompanying handbook are divided into modules. The handbook has been developed as a reference tool and provides more detailed information particularly with regards to child development.
Both the training program and the handbook are based on current research and contain strategies for engaging diverse families and communities in the active development of children’s early literacy.
The training program has now been delivered in Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, ACT and South Australia. The program has also been rolled across Victoria in partnership with the State Library of Victoria Young Readers Program.
What's next?
The Little Big Book Club is in the early stages of designing the next training modules of this program for rollout early to mid 2012.
