The Arts and Child Development - written by Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier

At The Little Big Book Club we are very fortunate to have wonderful partnerships with amazing organisations who share their time, expertise and resources with us. We first developed a friendship with The Adelaide Festival Centre two years ago when they approached us about their show The Gruffalo. We were delighted to help promote this event by featuring the wonderful book as one of our selections for the month. The Adelaide Festival Centre generously gave us some tickets that we were able to share with familes who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend. We again partnered this year with The Gruffalo's Child.

Late last year I had another catch up with the wonderful publicity and marketing team and as a result am able to share with you:

  • Details of upcoming children's performances at The Adelaide Festival Centre
  • A blog written for us by Douglas Gautier, the Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director, on the importance of The Arts and Child Development
  • A chance to win family passes to THREE shows presented by The Adelaide Festival Centre this summer!

The Arts and Child Development - written by Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier

The arts are an integral factor in child development, providing learning experiences that stand alone from, yet complement other learning areas. Children who are given the opportunity to see live performance from a young age gain cultural enrichment from the experience, as well as an increased cognitive ability.

Research from the University of Newcastle has discovered that the arts encourages different modes of reasoning, as they teach divergent thought processes and give children the capability to come up with more solutions to problems. The same research also identified that when 25% or more of a curriculum is devoted to arts programs, whether music, dance, visual art, writing, or drama, students then developed superior academic abilities, proving the complementary nature of arts education alongside sciences and other traditional subjects.

Arts education can engage young minds, helps develop critical thinking and analytical skills, and provides children with many opportunities to express and communicate their own feelings. Children often understand more than they know how to communicate – the arts promote non-verbal skill sets and allow children to communicate through alternative channels. The arts are fundamental in developing self-expression.

Arts education also encourages cross-cultural learning and promotes a heightened understanding of the diversity of cultures. I take the view that cultural activities and having an understanding of other cultures enrich your life. Children who are exposed to diverse cultures through artistic performance gain a deeper understanding of our world, its traditions and beliefs, which in turn leads to a more rounded and culturally aware adult.

Adelaide Festival Centre is committed to providing accessible, high quality and affordable programs for families and children, aged two and up. The most successful arts centres in the world aim to appeal to a broad range of audiences with creative programs that engage and inspire.

The best arts centres in the world are those that think about all of their audiences with their programming, and take into account the various age groups and their needs. Here at the Festival Centre we strive to fill those needs with creative programs that connect and grow with our audiences.

In 2012 the Festival Centre is presenting a number of performances designed to appeal to different age groups, these include:

 Angelina Ballerina’s Big Audition, performed by Royal New Zealand Ballet and set to the music of Tchaikovsky;

The List Operators for Kids! a comedy routine especially for younger audiences, and

White, a highly visual show created for 2 -4 year olds presented by one of Scotland’s top theatre groups for children Catherine Wheels Theatre Group.

In April Patch Theatre Company present Me and My Shadow it tells the story of a girl negotiating the tricky business of making friends with her shadow; it is stunning theatre that tells its story using paper, light, shadow, colour, water, music, sounds and words.

The Something on Saturday program, now in its 35th year, is another solid example of the commitment the Centre has to encouraging young arts patrons, and many South Australian children aged 3 to 10 enjoy their first theatrical experience through the program. Something on Saturday, which runs from May until September each year, provides creative, engaging and affordable entertainment for children, with performances that range from storytelling to magic, ballet to acrobatics, puppetry to circus skills.

As a parent of two daughters aged 5 and 3 I have even more reason to ensure the Festival Centre remains committed to providing a variety of performances for children. At the simplest level, arts programs targeted at children provide enjoyment and pleasure, but the deeper, less tangible benefits are equally as important. We are trying to expand the possibilities for the cultural education of young people.

Lord David Puttnam said learning through culture led to creative thinking and better problem-solving. "If we fail to offer our young people the opportunity to participate in the arts and culture, then we fail to support them in becoming the leading thinkers, innovators, creative business and community leaders of the future," The Guardian, Saturday 5 November 2011

I love the LBBC because it helps me as a busy Mum of 4 young children to find suitable reading books that I know that we will enjoy reading together. I also am a Teacher on maternity leave and as a Playgroup coordinator I have often selected books with the related activity sheets and these have been a fabulous resource for the kids at Playgroup.

Interested in Angelina Ballerina ticket giveaway or List operators!

I love the monthly book recommendations- but more than that I love the craft activities you can do with the stories!  Really gets the kids engaged into the books.

We would love to see Angelina Ballerina.

We love the LBBC because of the fabulous book recommendations particularly the Ages and Stages. Our local library has many books labelled and this makes it easier to choose appropriate books.

We'd love to see List Operators.

What's not to love? The recommendations of books for my kids, the free books at the library when my child was born, the rhyme time DVD which they can watch and join in, and the activity sheets which my son loves doing, and teaches him book association.

We would love to go and see White please.

I love to check out the monthly book selections for my grandsons and now I can also download e-books to share with them - how great is that!!!

White sounds like a show my grandsons would love!

My children and I love seeing all the ages & stages book recommendations. We pass a lovely bookshop every Saturday morning after having babychinos with my parents (granny & pop) and often stop in to buy a new book based on these recommendations. I also love all of your ideas for keeping the kids entertained. My children have enjoyed themselves for hours with some of the ideas provided on this website. We really do love it. We would love to win tickets to all of the shows, but know my daughter in particular would love to see Angelina.

We adore the LBBC for the inspiration it gives our family to slow down in this busy world we live to enjoy the age old tradition of story time ... All three of my little ones still get suchpleasure out of a new book - mainly because they get a mummy or daddy cuddle at the same time! We would adore to see Angelina ballerina.... Of course we all love a dancing mouse!! Thank you for the chance:)

My favourite part of the LBBC is hearing about new books and books that we'd never come across before when they're posted on facebook.  Thank you for this website :)

I'd beover the moon with Angelina tickets (lol, as would every other little girl in Adelaide's mum!)

PS The "Register" buttons on your blog comments don't work (have to use the link at the top).

We love all the ideas and tips on your web page and facebook. My 3 girls 7yrs, nearly 5yrs and 3yrs just love books and the activities and games just reinforce the important literacy themes from reading. We would love any tickets :-)

The Rhyme Time dvd & book i received in my pack made a huge difference to the quality of time i spend with miss 2.5. We sing and act out to nursery rhymes all the time. I would never have remembered the words to nursery rhymes otherwise. Thanks lbb! Tickets to White would be magical thanks.

I am always keen on getting new ideas of activities to do with the kids, especially those that assist in developing their love for learning and understanding.

It is also good to read the extra bits that explain why things are good for our children.

I would love tickets to White and  Angelina Ballerina, they both sounds fantastic!

Books have always been a big part of my life and I have made them a big part of my childrens also.

I love reading all the book reviews on  TLLBC and enjoy doing the activity sheets together with my children. It's great to be kept up to date with new releases and recommendations.

We would love tickets to Angelina Ballerina :)

I love the activities that extend the books therefore pushing them beyond just the 'reading' of the story. Most of the materials we already have at home so don't have to go shopping for new supplies, which is great! As I have an 18 month old and a now 3 year old, I find the activities are age appropiate and help to develop their fine motor skills as well as learning how to work with each other (ie sharing). I would like to win tickets to see Angelina Ballerina. Thanks!

I love hearing about new books that we might not have seen before and then getting our hands on them by putting them on hold at the library. Libraries are AWESOME!!

We'd like tickets to Angelina!

Thanks

I love to see people talking and sharing about books! One of the best gifts we can give our children is a love of reading and time spent with them enjoying a good story. Every comment and idea celebrates this ( and activities are great too)

Angelina Ballerina or White!!

We love to read, and the recommendations based on age we always request straight away from our local library. They ideas are always spot on, and the children love to read them! We also love the fabulous craft ideas that pop up on the LBBC Facebook page!

We would love to attend White. :-)

I love the book reviews.  Often they trigger wonderful memories of books that I had forgotten about and of times I spent curled up on my bed escaping to worlds within those pages and they heighten my desire to share those wonders with my daughter.  I also love how TLBBC helps us achieve this by giving me ideas and tips to on how to engage her and make the books seem so real to such a little mind.  It really is a wonderful site!

I would love tickets to Angelina Ballerina (or White).

I love the book-specific activties that the LBBC provides for free, and the age recommendations to buy books that are perfect for their intended recipient! I would love to win tickets to White or to List Operators - one perfect for my youngest child, and the other for my oldest!

We enjoy the activities that go along with the books.  LBBC gives us the "opportunity to participate in the arts and culture"

My children would love to see Angelina Ballerina or List Operators.

I love everything...but in particular the book themes, we use them as our start for book borrowing at the library.  Also LOVE the activity sheets.  Angelina Ballerina or White (is it wed 1st or sat 11??)

I love reading the reviews of books and ways to connect with our kids to enhance their literacy.

I would love tickets to White.........or Angelina Ballerina!
